Same here...though we have always had one before. Also, I don't know where
we'd put it as it's a small kitchen and I won't give up my lazy suzan thing
in the corner where it would logically go. Maybe when we remodel in a
couple of years though.
When we first bought the house I thought, "we WILL get a dishwasher
immediately!" Oddly enough, I don't miss it. I have two older kids who are
capable of being "dishwashers" and that is one of their jobs around here,
though I end up doing most of the dishwashing anyway. I'm one of those,
"clean as you go" type of cooks. :-)
The only time I have ever missed it has been when we have lots of company
over and I have a ton of pots, pans, dishes, etc. That's not that often.

Re:OT - Dishwashers....

Up until a month ago I didn't either and it was making me nuts. *laughs* The
kitchen cabinets in this house are just slightly lower than counter tops
should be (older house, cabinets were built for the house, we are only
renting so we are stuck with them), so washing dishes means leaning over to
reach the sink and your back completely isn't happy. So my hubby and I
bought each other a dishwasher for christmas. It's a standard size, but
portable so it didn't need installing or anything. I love it.

And Air Conditioning is a MUST where I live. Well it's a must for me. And
finding a house without it is very rare.

Re:OT - Dishwashers....

I do have one, but I rarely use it. I don't use enough dishes in one day
to fill it and it creeps me out to have dirty dishes just sitting in
there for days.
We do have AC, though, and I use that!

we don't have a dishwasher....and don't really want one either.
BUT....my new tumble drier (which has taken up the remaining space in the
kitchen where any dishwasher could go) has been an absolute God-send

We have one. For three weeks, it was broken and it was a pain. I do at least
one load a day and often two!

Re:OT - Dishwashers....

We have a dishwasher and an A/C, if I had to give up one of them, the
dishwasher would be the first to go. I can't live without an A/C.

We didn't have one for the first years of our marriage and I vowed that when
we bought a house, it would either have a dishwasher or have a place for
one. Honestly, I couldn't live without it any longer! Peggy- sounds like a
great gift to ask Santa for!

Oh lordy - we just got airconditioning 3 years ago. We live in Wisconsin
and honestly only really had about 2 weeks mid-summer that were miserable
even with the fans going. But now that I have it - I run it all summer
long. So comfortable! I'm surprised that airconditioning isn't commen
there. Don't you have a fairly warm climate?

Just wait Megan. As A&A get older, you will have more dishes than you ever
dreamed of!!! I run our dishwasher every day (sometimes twice if I have
things like bath toys to run through!) and there are just 3 of us!

Re:OT - Dishwashers....

No dishwasher here, either!
We are supposed to do an addition to make the kitchen larger and then I will
have a dishwasher. Or else we will move to a bigger house because I really want
a dishwasher now that our family is bigger. I think I would prefer moving to an
addition.

LOL...BTDT, for too many years to think about!
I don't know what I would do without mine. I cook three meals a day,
and run at least one load a day, mostly two. As it is, I spend a huge
amount of time in the kitchen - I can't imagine if I had to do them by
hand - I'd be there forever! I probably wouldn't like cooking as much
as I do either...

No kidding. I have TWO dishwashers and I run them both every night. I
have the kind that allows you to set a time to run in the middle of
the night, when the power is cheaper and you aren't bothered by the
sound, so every morning I have nice clean dishes. But we put
*everything* in the dishwashers. Pots, pans, plastic, china,
silver....if it can be washed, it goes in the machine. Great
invention, that!

MArjorie,
I thought of you when I read this thread. I remembered that you had 2
dishwasher. I love the sound of the dishwasher, though, sorta relaxing
to me. I guess somewhat like a womb, lol.

Re:OT - Dishwashers....

I am a faithful dishwasher user. I love mine. I really like the idea of
things getting sterilized in the dishwasher. DH and I have been lucking in
that every place we have lived together has had a dishwasher. I would not be
too happy to have to live without it for any length of time.

Re:OT - Dishwashers....

I could not LIVE without my dishwasher. It runs two or three times a day.
But I know of no one in this city that has air-conditioning. The Pacific
Ocean breezes keep us cool!

Our dishwashers are both very quiet, which is the main feature of
paying way too much for the brand (Bosch), but.... the TV that the
family watches is off the kitchen and the noise just makes us turn the
volume up on the TV, which very much bothers DS, who is very sensitive
to noise. It just isn't worth listening to him complain nonstop. I
learned to use the timer settings, and I found a big dent in my
electric bill at the same time. Now I also do laundry late at night.
The savings are pretty dramatic when you live where electricity is
more than the price of gold. :-)

Boy, that's the truth! Our gas and electric together here in PDX
aren't even 75% of what we paid in the Bay Area for electric - and our
house is almost double the sq. footage!
